TV Land

Okay, this is sad. Very sad. I started out playing around with a little meme wherein one marks off the show's one has watched more than three times. I kept thinking of shows that were not on the list, so I decided to do a little googlin' and see what shows I could find. I then added all the shows I've watched (more than three times) and deleted all the shows I haven't watched. My final list is staggering. It represents thousands of hours of idle time - most of them before children (but not all). It represents what I've put into my head over these past 43 years. It is, most certainly, a wake-up call. I shamefully submit to you an accounting of my wasted time (with some amount of admitting that I did enjoy some of it!):

The Kittens Are Here!

The boys and I were working outside raking up old leaves and pulling weeds. When we finished, the boys checked on Aunt Kay and she had already birthed her two kittens! Yay!

One is a grey tabby and the other seems mostly grey with a little white on the face. Maybe they will both be tabbies...it is still hard to tell. They are SO little!!

Mommy cat is very proud and happy. She hasn't stopped purring for about 8 hours now! Very cute. Very.

Colin has started his first comic book! I will probably get in trouble for sharing with you, but I think it is really good! I've included the cover and page 10 (which is not yet colored). The plan is for a fully colorized, 12-page adventure.

So, we're about to have kittens. Any day now. The boys are getting pretty excited about it. Next week is Spring break, and Colin has announced he plans to sit in the family room with Aunt Kay 24/7 until the kittens are born. It will be one exciting week.

I've been reading up on Birthing Plans for Kittens because the last time I was in any way involved, I was 8 years old...so there was a good chance I have forgotten Something Very Important. I don't intend to actually involve myself in the delivery, but I am thinking there may be many questions that day and I might want to be prepared.

Some of the questions have already begun.

When Aunt Kay first moved in a few weeks ago, Spencer noticed she had "milk spots" on her tummy. Cute name, don't you think? Little milk spots for her babies. Then last night he asked, "What happens to those, you know, milk pimples after the babies are born?"

Milk pimples?

It is kind of hard to answer a question like that without laughing, but I managed.

Of course, I fumbled the answer when I mentioned that when they started eating cat food they would be old enough to go to their new homes.

Tears ensued.

Wailing and weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Colin hysterically pointed out that he was deeply hurt to find out I was that kind of mommy...the kind that might give away her own children.

"But I would NEVER do that!"

"It is is the same thing, Mommy. You would take away Aunt Kay's children. How do you think she would feel? She loves her children. And it makes me think you would give me away, too."

(Spencer is strangely quiet.)

I explained that cat mommies expect their children to move to homes where they can comfort other people who love cats. Animals are different than people. They aren't sentimental like we are.....

Wailing and weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Spencer: still strangely quiet.

I tried to appeal to the imbalance that would occur if we had more cats than people. The work. The litter boxes. The food. It would be like living on a farm! With Chores!

Colin's reply? "I'm going to live on one of those farms some day. (sniffle, sniffle)"

He is his father's son.

Weekday Update

Yeah, I'm still alive and all that. Barely hangin' on with all my responsibilities and such, but definitely still alive. I sure wish I could borrow some of that time I wasted during my 20s and use it now. I'm not doing anything I don't enjoy now - I just don't have enough time to do all the stuff I want to do. That doesn't stop me from trying though. Oh, no. No, no, no. That would be sanity. We don't do that here.

So, we have a "new" cat. Of course, she isn't new at all. She's been hanging around our back yard for a good six months - ever since she discovered the candy man lives here (that would be my husband). Who wouldn't stay for 6 meals a day and a constant flow of fresh milk? Frankly, I won't be surprised the day I come home and find 72 cats lounging around a 4-foot fountain-0-milk, licking tuna off their whiskers. That day is coming. Yes. It is.

Anyway, this cat became a victim of our antiquated garage door one night last week. We left the door open and somehow it came down in the night, trapping her paw between two panels high up on the door. I'm guessing she was sleeping on top of the door, some sort of fight broke out between the cripcats and the bloodcats and suddenly she found herself scrambling to stay on top.

James found her hanging from the door when he went out to deliver the milk in the morning. We rushed her and her flat-as-a-crepe paw to the vet and spent Colin's college fund fixing her up. And there is GOOD NEWS. She's got two little kittens in her tummy.

Yes.

So, I'm spending my days giving her pain medicine, giving her antibiotics, taking her back to the vet because her splint fell off, changing her litter box each time she uses it, feeling that tummy grow, taking her back to the vet because her splint fell off again and, finally, learning how to change the splint all by myself because, frankly, I am broke.

Somebody will just have to donate the 4-foot milk fountain and the tuna and the milk.

Other than all that, things are going along rather nicely. Three out of four of us are healthy (finally) and James is among the walking sick. The weather is finally FINALLY beautiful. Heavenly, really. We're finishing up basketball and getting ready for soccer and t-ball. The scouts are having a blast because, well, we are of course the most excellent scouting leaders. Of course. And then VBS is on the way and going strong.

I'm extra busy at work, which is the main reason for my blogging absence. I could tell you all about the crazy things people sue about, but then I'd have to kill you.

Anybody want a kitten?
